David Thompson Hinterland is coming back strong in its second
edition as an out-and-back 4-day
cycling tour exploring the David Thompson Country. The ride leaves
from west of Rocky
Mountain House, follows David Thompson Highway #11 to
Saskatchewan River Crossing
on the Icefield Parkway and then back tracks to Rocky Mountain
House, a total
of 360 kms in 4 days. An optional, longer total distance of
365 km is also available to participants. Riders choosing the
longer
cycling option will leave Rocky Mountain House National Historical
Site, and
the regular distance riders will leave from Chambers Creek
Campground
Provincial Recreation Area. All riders will meet at the Rocky Mountain House
National Historical Site at 9 h 30 AM.
The proposed itinerary is as follows though subject to change:
Thursday May 31
·Meet at
Rocky
Mountain House National Historical Site (7 km west of Rocky Mountain House on
Highway 11A) at 9:30 AM.
·Visit the
Rocky Mountain House National Historical Site at 10:00 AM
through a guided tour
featuring the history of David Thompson country (included in tour
fees)
· Cycle
60 kms (optional 90 kms) of rolling
terrain to the Shunda Creek HI Hostel in Nordegg. Expect 3 kms
of hard packed gravel road to reach the hostel though a shuttle
service will be
available.
· Cheer
with
your fellow riders at the wine & cheese evening welcome
party
Friday, June 1
· Enjoy
a
morning visit of Nordegg’s historical coal mine and museum (included in tour fees)
· Cycle
45 kms to the David Thompson Resort and check in
· Hike the area
around the resort, play mini golf, frisbee golf,
volleyball or horse shoes
· Meet fellow
riders for an optional pub or restaurant dinner (not included in trip
fees)
Saturday, June 2
· Cycle
to
Saskatchewan River Crossing for lunch 45 kms, the
total for the day is 90 kms. As this
day is an out
and back, riders can turn around at any time
· Hike to
Owen’s Creek Canyon
· Return
to the David
Thompson Country Resort
· Get some
rest for the big Sunday ride
Sunday, June 3
· Cycle
to
Chambers Creek Provincial Recreational Area, 105 km (optional
135 kms to Rocky Mountain House).
· Return
to
Calgary.
Coordinators are finalizing the arrangements and budget
however we expect the cost to be between $335 to $450
depending on the number
of participants and cost increases over last year.
This trip is suitable for intermediate & advanced riders due to the
distances involved.
Though the SAG vehicle will have room to carry bikes for emergencies, riders should be prepared to go the distance each day as the cargo van
cannot carry more than 1 passenger at a time.
Participants will be able to pack personal coolers in the SAG vehicle.
If the
minimum number of
registrants has not been reached by May 16, the tour may be
cancelled and
payment will be returned.
Pre-
trip meeting will be
held at a private residence in Calgary (details to follow by email) on
Wednesday
May 16 at 7:00pm.
