Elbow Valley Cycle Club - Cycling Program 2008
On- and off-road recreational bicycling is the EVCC's primary focus. Day rides are usually organized both days of each weekend from early spring to mid-autumn. The majority of day rides begin in Calgary, the remainder in nearby towns, Kananaskis or the National Mountain Parks.
Multi-day cycle tours are usually offered on or in conjunction with holiday weekends throughout the year. Each ride is graded for difficulty and distance. There is a possibility that we are also conducting evening rides on weekdays. The EVCC
program director (Executive List on the "About Us" page) or the tour coordinator
can be contacted for further details.
Road Rides
Road Rides are day trips, usually on weekends, in and around Calgary and in the Rockies. They cover all difficulty levels from easy rides mainly on City pathways to longer and more difficult rides of up to 100km and the most advanced century rides. Please contact the trip coordinators for more information such as meeting place, start time or car pooling. Also make sure that you are aware of the ratings, so that the chosen trip suits your fitness level.
Mountain Bike Rides
The rides are off-road and have therefore a different rating system. Make sure
to familiarize yourself with the difficulty levels before joining in on one of
the rides. As with road rides the trips take place mainly on weekends, but there
may also be the odd weekday evening ride.
Easy Riders
This subgroup of the EVCC attracts cyclists who are able to cycle weekdays
and/or who are in the +55 age group. The Easy Rider trips generally combine
relaxed pace shorter rides with more challenging alternatives. Their rides often
include a scheduled lunch or coffee stop at a participant's home.
Multi-Day Tours 2008
EVCC volunteers run a number of exciting multi-day trips, which are described in
more detail below.
Sunshine Coast Spring Fling
This tour is in it's second year and seems to become quickly a favourite. The route covers BC's sunshine coast and Vancouver island over a 10-day period. Accommodation provided will be hotels, B&Bs and hostels (bedding provided). Fully supported it should be a pleasure to ride this intermediate/advance tour. Daily distances range between 40km and 70km with some hilly sections.
For more information click on the topic above or contact tour coordiantor Sandra Kunzel via EMAIL or at 403-241-3099.
Golden Triangle 2008
The Golden Triangle (also known as the "GT") is the flagship tour of the EVCC.
Held during the annual Victoria Day weekend, (May 19 to 21 2007), it covers
about 320 km in three days, crossing the Great Divide twice. A fully supported
tour with food and repair services, it attracts in excess of 400 riders. The
tour price includes camping. Those wishing fixed roof accommodation, can find
phone numbers for hotel & motels on the information sheet, which comes with the
application form. This year's tour will proceed clockwise, from Castle Junction
to Radium, then to Golden and finally back to Castle Junction.
More information and an application form can now be downloaded from this
site. You will require the

Jasper to Banff Icefield Parkway
This classic ride along the Icefield Parkway through Jasper and Banff National
Parks has some of the most magnificent scenery - a must for anyone who has not
yet done it. This is a fully sag-wagon supported ride, with hostel accommodation
along the route and bus transport to and from Calgary.
Logan Pass
Held during the Heritage Day long weekend August 4 to 6, this hub and spoke trip features car camping (car as locker) with light van support. We conquer challenging Logan pass on Saturday, play in the sun and water on Sunday, and wind up with a gentle ride on a quiet mountain forest road on Monday. Bicycling is undoubtedly the best way to see one of the prettiest mountain passes in North America. Accommodation will be camping and/or hotel in West Glacier, Montana. The tour will be coordinated by Merv Matson who can be reached at 284-1377 or via
email for more information.
Silver Triangle
The three day Silver Triangle tour, held over the Labour Day long weekend, September 1 to 3, 2007, will visit Nelson, New Denver and Kaslo along its route. Check out the detail by clicking on the heading above. Tour coordinator is Georgianne Dwyer whom you can contact either via
email or at 403-249-9877.
Kootenay Kruise
The Kootenay Kruise (formerly the Silver 8) is an extended version of the Silver Triangle. The route winds its way from Galena Bay (south of Revelstoke) via New Denver, Kaslo and Nelson as far south as Christina Lake before returning to Galena Bay. The Kootenay Kruise is a 10 day ride that will begin on August 25 and end on September 3, 2007.
The West Kootenays are known for relatively quiet roads, lots of places to stop and swim and many friendly little towns. This is an advanced ride as it is hilly and the distance to be covered is 50 to 100 kilometers per day. The Kootenay Kruise has exhilarating downhills which are honestly earned on the thigh burning climbs.
Tour coordinator will be Sandra Kunzel who can be contacted via
email or at 403-241-3099. Itinerary and other information can be looked up by clicking on the paragraph title above.
BC Wineries Tour
Two days of cycling on the Thanksgiving weekend, October 6 to 8, 2007, with wine tasting at some of the best wineries in the Kelowna area. Wine and cheese party and Thanksgiving dinner included. Routes and distances vary. The option of riding the Kettle Valley Rail trail through Myra canyon may be offered this year, depending on the progress of the reconstruction of eleven trestles damaged by the great forest fires of 2003. Base camp or hotel accommodation at the same location throughout the weekend. Experience fall colours in BC when the riding season has usually waned in Alberta.
San Diego Surf & Citrus Tour 2007
This tour gives you a reprieve from winter in Canada by heading to sunny California. The dates are November 29 to December 9 and the detailed itinerary is still being determined. It will be published towards the end of the 2007 season. The tour generally includes ground transfers to/from airport, hotel/motel accommodation, baggage shuttle, and some breakfasts. Cycling will be easy and relaxing, averaging 40 to 60 km/day.
