Elbow Valley Cycle Club - Cycling Program 2011

On- and off-road recreational bicycling is the EVCC's primary focus. Day rides are usually organized both days of each weekend from early spring to mid-autumn. The majority of day rides begin in Calgary, the remainder in nearby towns, Kananaskis, or the national mountain parks.

Multi-day cycle tours are usually offered on or in conjunction with holiday weekends throughout the year. Each ride is graded for difficulty and distance. There is a possibility that we are also conducting evening rides on weekdays. The EVCC program director (Executive List on the "About Us" page) or the tour coordinator can be contacted for further details.

Road Rides

Road Rides are day trips, usually on weekends, in and around Calgary and in the Rockies. They cover all difficulty levels from easy rides mainly on City pathways to longer and more difficult rides of up to 100 kilometres and the most advanced century rides. Please contact the trip coordinators for more information such as meeting place, start time or car pooling. Also make sure that you are aware of the ratings, so that the chosen trip suits your fitness level.

Easy Riders Leisure

The Easy Rider Leisure trips generally combine relaxed pace shorter rides with social time like an extended lunch or coffee stop. Easy Rider Leisure outings usually occur mid-week and include a mix of retirees plus shift workers and others with flexible schedules that allow them to ride week days.

Pathways

These trips take place on Calgary’s extensive system of pathways, but they may include short sections of on-road cycling.

Multi-Day Tours 2011

EVCC volunteers run a number of exciting multi-day trips, which are described in more detail here.

Sunshine Coast Spring Fling

This tour has become an early season favorite as the West Coast is known for mild temperatures. Tour usually begins the 4th Friday in April and begins and ends in Vancouver. The route covers BC's Sunshine Coast and Vancouver Island over a 10-day period. We hop several ferries during the trip, passing through Sechelt, Egmont and Powell River till we reach the end of highway 101 in Lund. Catch a ferry over to Vancouver Island and pedal through Courtenay, Qualicum Beach and Gabriola Island before returning to Nanaimo and back to the mainland. This ride has a support vehicle and driver to carry luggage. Accommodation is provided by hotels and hostels. This ride is rated as an intermediate/advanced tour with daily distances ranging between 30 to 80 kilometers with some hilly sections.

For more information click on the trip title above or contact tour coordinator Sandra Kunzel via email or at 403-241-3099.

Golden Triangle 2011

The Golden Triangle (also known as the "GT") is the flagship tour of the EVCC. Held during the annual Victoria Day weekend, it covers about 320 kilometres in three days, crossing the Great Divide twice. A fully supported tour with food and repair services, it usually attracts the maximum of 400 riders. The tour price includes camping. Those wishing fixed-roof accommodation can find phone numbers for hotels and motels on the information sheet, which comes with the application form. This year's tour will proceed clockwise, from Castle Junction to Radium, then to Golden and finally back to Castle Junction.

Jasper to Banff Icefield Parkway

This classic ride along the Icefield Parkway through Jasper and Banff National Parks has some of the most magnificent scenery - a must for anyone who has not yet done it. This is a fully sag-wagon supported ride, with hostel accommodation along the route and bus transport to and from Calgary.

This tour is usually run once or twice a year.

The itinerary for the 2009 trip was:

Day One - Saturday June 27th: We will leave Calgary at 2:00 pm and have dinner in Jasper staying at a Jasper Hostel. Day Two – Sunday June 28th: Today we cycle 90km with stops at Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Lodge and falls then on to the Beauty Creek Hostel Day Three – Monday June 29th: Today we cycle 56km with stops at the Icefield Center, walk up to Parker Ridge then on to the Ramparts Hostel Day Four – Tuesday June 30th: Today we cycle 70km with stops at Mistaya Canyon, the Summit and Petro Lake, Num-Ti-Jah lodge then on to the Mosquito Creek Hostel Day Five – Wednesday July 1st: Today we cycle 85km stopping in Lake Louise and on to Banff along the 1A then the van ride back to Calgary.

Logan Pass Hub and Spoke

This may be the most flexible multi-day trip of all, with many great choices of relaxing and challenging activities in one of the most enjoyable mountain playgrounds in North America. It runs Friday to Monday on the Heritage Day long weekend in August. Rated intermediate, it can be as easy or challenging as you like because camp does not move. We camp for three nights on the edge of Glacier National Park, home to some of the nicest attractions you can get to on a bike: Logan Pass, Going To The Sun (GTTS) Road, water falls, clear mountain lakes, lakeside summer villages, and Montana saloons. (Okay, the saloons aren't in the Park and they're only almost nice - your second best dance shoes will do.) It's car camping so bring your toys and lawn chairs. The program is flexible each day: challenge the awesome GTTS Road to the beautiful Pass (or not), ride pretty and pretty-easy mountain roads past lakes and through forests, hike the Highline Trail from the Pass, golf, canoe, swim, or sleep in and then suntan at the beach with a book and a cone. Sound too easy? Then climb Logan over and back, an imperial century ride with a combined 1724 metre ascent! We'll have a wine and cheese party, a BBQ, and bad-weather-escapes to Whitefish and Kalispell. Further description of the trips is here. Mark your calendar now, and follow Events > Upcoming Events (see above) for contact information and the details when the event is posted.

Kootenay Kruise

The Kootenay Kruise is a camping style tour with a support vehicle and driver to carry luggage.  The tour is a 10 day ride that ends on the Labor Day Monday in September.  The West Kootenays are known for relatively quiet roads, many places to swim and friendly little towns. The exhilarating downhill runs are honestly earned on the long thigh burning climbs.  Follow the mining and logging history of the area in the numerous museums, take a ride on a hand powered cable car and hike to the breath-taking heights of the Wolf’s Ears in the Valhalla Mountains.  This is an advanced ride as it is hilly and the distance to be covered is 50 to 100 kilometres per day.

For more information click on the trip title above or contact tour coordinator Sandra Kunzel via email or at 403-241-3099.

This tour was run in 2009 but will not be offered in 2010.

BC Wineries Tour

Two days of cycling on the Thanksgiving weekend with wine tasting at some of the best wineries in the Kelowna area. Wine and cheese party and Thanksgiving dinner included. Routes and distances vary. The option of riding the Kettle Valley Rail trail through Myra canyon may be offered this year, depending on the progress of the reconstruction of eleven trestles damaged by the great forest fires of 2003. Base camp or hotel accommodation at the same location throughout the weekend. Experience fall colours in BC when the riding season has usually waned in Alberta.

San Diego Surf & Citrus Tour

This tour gives you a reprieve from winter in Canada by heading to sunny California in November or December. The tour generally includes ground transfers to/from airport, hotel/motel accommodation, baggage shuttle, and some breakfasts. Cycling will be easy and relaxing, averaging 40 to 60 kilometers per day.

Tumbleweed Tussle

Ride the Gold Rush Trail from Hope to Barkerville over 6 days, cycling approximately 650 kilometres and a huge climb. Tackle the challenge of the Tumbleweed Tussle. This ride will combine thigh burning hills, distance and the potential for hot weather. Travel through the scenic Fraser Canyon, past Hells Gate up through Lytton, the rafting capitol of Canada. Then on to Cache Creek, 100 Mile House and Williams Lake where the scenery changes from desert to trees and grizzly bears. We finish the ride in Wells where we stay in the historic but modernized Wells Hotel. Take some time to explore the Gold Rush history in Barkerville and perhaps take in an high steppin’ old fashioned burlesque show before driving back to Calgary.

Club Socials

Join us at club socials which are held the first Tuesday of every month at the Founder's Hall (Nifty 50s), Parkdale Community Association, 3512 - 5th Ave N.W. beginning at 7:30 p.m. Guests are welcome to see what we are all about. These entertaining and educational functions feature cycling adventure slide shows, technical presentations, and talks of interest to cyclists followed by light refreshments and an opportunity to meet with members of the club. During the summer some of these meetings are held outdoors at different locations which include wiener roasts and other activities.

Besides these regular meetings there are also opportunities to join special social events such as restaurant nights: "Death by Chocolate", darts and skating parties. In November a Volunteer Appreciation Night is held in conjunction with our AGM to acknowledge volunteer contributions made by club members.
