Coordinator: Maria Saley

Distance: 62 km Elevation Gain: 676 m

Pace: 20-24kph Enjoy the scenery.

Coordinator will set regrouping points. Bring bear spray and be prepared to be self-sufficient.

Level: intermediate

E-bikes welcome

A great opportunity to cycle this scenic route while it is closed to cars.

We will meet by the Railway Station - there are washrooms there. Take Norquay exit from Hwy 1 and go across the railway tracks, then turn left.

Picnic lunch at Castle junction in front of the convenience store on the south side of the highway.

Note: From Johnston Canyon to Castle there is car traffic, so ride single file in that section, and a flashing tail light is recommended.

As this is an out and back ride, you may choose to turn around at any time. But please get word to the coordinator if you abandon the group.

We may not have a sweep, so all riders should stay with at least one other person.

Some outhouses along route are open. Full facilities available at Johnston Canyon and near Castle Junction.

Please note that this map shows us starting at Fenlands but we will be starting at the Railway Station.

Tuesday Tuneup Springbank, Adv, 50km, 500m, EduardSpelier (Tuesday, May 12, 2026)

Coordinator: Eduard Spelier (filling in for Heather Opseth)

Level: Advanced and Advanced+

Distance: 50 km

Pace (2-3 groups):

Advanced group(s) - 25-27+ kph average speed

Advanced+ group - 28-30+ kph average speed (self-guided)

For advanced/experienced road riders, must be comfortable with paceline riding. Ride at your own pace on hill segments, regrouping after each climb.

Elevation Gain: 500+ m

Warmer weather and longer evenings have arrived -- that means it's time to stop doing hill repeats and start doing some beautiful scenic rides around Springbank! In keeping with the "hilly" theme, every week will take us to one or more climbs in the area.

Ride as hard as you like on the hills -- make it intense, challenge some Strava segments, or just enjoy the views.

This week's hills: Springbank Heights, Emerald Bay, and the full Old Banff Coach Road climb. Fun finish down 101st street!

Parking spot is the Eden Brook Funeral Home, off Lower Springbank Road (see route map for exact location).

Newcomers welcome. There will be good company and a social atmosphere. If you are unsure about the speed, pacelining format, and difficulty level of the ride, please contact the coordinator in advance.

Sheep River Falls Junction Ck, Int, 77km, 851m, VicUrban (Wednesday, May 13, 2026)

Coordinator: Vic Urban

       Difficulty: intermediate/advanced

Distance: 77 Km (intermediate)

Pace: 20-25 kph (intermediate)

Elevation: 851 m (advanced, two ~12% grade climbs of ~2 Km)

Ride format: No sweep, limited stops

E-Bikes: Yes

Parking and Meeting Place: library/community centre in Turner Valley

Route description:

A hilly and scenic ride in the beautiful Sheep River Valley. We ride up the Sheep River Road (Hwy 546) to the end where we loop through the Junction Ck day use area at the end of the road and return. On the way back, we stop at the Sheep River Falls viewpoint (see map; approximately 41.5 km) for a lunch break.

This ride is happening while the portion of the road past Sandy McNabb is closed to motorized vehicles which eliminates that component.

As this is an out-and-back ride with an obvious route, there will be no sweep. Be prepared to be self-sufficient, with enough food and water, and equipped and able to change your own flat tire if needed. This is bear country and consider carrying bear spray.

Social elements:

Lunch stop at Sheep Falls on the return (at 41.6 km)

Tailgate/coffee shop at Turner Valley following our ride.

Safety:

Bring your own tools, spare tubes, etc.

Consider bringing bear spray.

We need to cross cattle guards several times.

There is no cell service for much of the ride

Steep climbs/descents when we cross the bridge at 30.2 km and again at 46.8 km.

Golden Triangle 2026 Multi Day, Int, 320km, 3300m, DonHollingshead (Friday, May 22, 2026)

Sadly, the 2026 GT has been cancelled. Parks Canada will no longer grant us permission to hold this event.

Participants will receive an email explaining the situation and reimbursement.

The Columbia River Tour will replace it for now allowing GT participants to use existing hotel reservations and will be open for registration in early March.

Columbia River Tour 2026 Multi Day, Int, 260km, 1500m, DonHollingshead (Friday, May 22, 2026)

This tour replaces the cancelled Golden Triangle event.

Parks Canada will not approve another Golden Triangle tour. So EVCC is shifting gears and will run a 3 day event along the Columbia River between Radium and Golden, the flattest and least busy (traffic wise) section of the former GT route.

Join us for a 3 day adventure in the Columbia Valley. Dotted by small farms, fields of dandelions, grazing horses and flanked by snow capped peaks, Hwy 95 and its paved shoulders threads its way between Golden and Radium. We ride along the Columbia River between these towns (Golden-Radium-Golden, 100 km each way) for 2 days with a shuttle available up to the Radium Hot Springs for a soak on Friday evening. On Sunday, those who would like can tackle a 30km ride (1km vertical) up Kicking Horse Canyon to the Yoho Park Gate then 30km back to Golden.

The optional Sunday climb from Golden to the Yoho Park Gate starts early enough to avoid much of the traffic on Hwy 1 which is eastbound later in the afternoon. The Kicking Horse Canyon twinning of the Trans Canada Highway added shoulders to this stretch of highway. The work is an engineering marvel, very scenic and is best viewed from a bicycle saddle.

We meet up at Golden Travelodge Friday May 22 for a 10 AM start. Parking is available there for all. We will support you with baggage transfers plus fuel stops each day where we serve fruit, energy snacks, sandwiches to order and provide water and Gatorade to refill water bottles (dietary preferences can be accommodated). You will need to book your own accommodation at the 2 recommended hotels: Radium Prestige Hotel for May 22 and Golden Travelodge* for May 23. (Golden Travelodge will allow all participants to park at their hotel for the weekend.)

If you want to camp instead, try Redstreak Campground in Radium and Golden Municipal Campground.

The registration fee covers volunteer expenses, luggage and hot springs shuttles and snacks and lunches along the route. A mechanic will accompany us. Surplus funds will be returned to participants.

View the route maps here.

*To book with Golden Travelodge, phone them directly (250-344-2915) rather than using the Travelodge central reservation system. Tell them you are with the EVCC so they know you will be part of the weekend parking arrangement.

In Radium the recommended accommodation is the Prestige Hotel, though there is still a little room left across the street at the Mountain Springs Motel.

Kicking Horse Canyon

Ghost River to Waiparous Return, Int, 78km, 624m, PattyWest (Wednesday, May 27, 2026)

Coordinator: Patty West

Difficulty: Intermediate

Distance: 78 km

Elevation: 624 m (a few steeper climbs)

Pace: 25 km/h, no sweep

Parking: Ghost Dam Recreation Area

E-Bikes allowed: Yes

It's time for a fall ride along the Ghost River Valley, one of our favourite routes! This is a scenic ride following the Ghost River best ridden on mid-weekdays when the roads are quietest.

There is no sweep as this is an out and back ride.

There is a snack stop on the south side of the Ghost River Bridge on Richards Road (see marker on the map). We will stop on the return from the turn around at the end of Richards Road.

The ride will end with a tailgate party at Ghost Lake after the ride so bring your lawn chair and some post-ride recovery snacks. Some brave cyclists swim in Ghost Lake after the ride to cool off on hot days.

Route details:

From the Ghost Lake parking lot, we head East on 1A for 4.5 km, then north and northwest on Highway 40 (Forestry Trunk Road) through Waiparous. At km 28.7 km, keep right and continue on H 40 to the end of the pavement (3 km more). Then return to the intersection with Richards Road (km 34.6), keep right and cycle Richard Road to the end of the pavement. On the return, we stop on the south side of the Ghost River dam for a lunch break beside the river. We then continue on Richards road, turn right onto H 40 and return on H 40 and 1A back to the parking lot.

Safety:

Narrow shoulders on Highway 40 (Forestry Trunk Road)

Limited cell service

No services (i.e., food, water)

Narrow should on highway 1A bridge crossing over Ghost Lake

The two bridges on highway 40 have steep approaches, are signle lane with alternating traffic and have wooden decks (so watch for cracks or missing boards and uneven surfaces)

Steep descent on the return to the Highway 1A intersection from Highway 40 (and a steep climb the other way obviously)

E-Bikes: no

Route description:

This is an out-and-back adventure, starting from Banff and cycling along the entire Bow Valley Parkway (1A) to Lake Louise Ski Resort.

We will stop for a lunch break at the Lake Louise Ski Resort. There are a number of eateries open at the resort if you wish to purchase a lunch. I'm suggesting we stop at the Banded Peak Base Camp. Or you can pack a lunch and enjoy it on the grass. We then return along the same route we went out to find a tailgate party at the end.

There will be a very brief stop out and back at Castle Junction to regroup.

No sweep, limited stops.

This is meant to be a longer intermediate pace with few stops, the major stop being Lake Louise Ski Resort for lunch and very brief stops at Castle Junction.

If you run into trouble, you can use the Roam Bus to return to Banff.

DO NOT PARK at the lot at the train station. This is the overflow lot. We will meet in the main park to the east off the traffic circle.

Safety elements:

Consider carrying bear spray

There are areas on 1A without cell service

Be self-sufficient; carry tools and be prepared to perform simple bike maintenance

There will be no sweep. There is a brief stop at Castle Junction.

Our annual Highwood Pass ride series

June 6 to June 14, 2026

Hustle up Highwood Pass in June before the winter gates open to traffic on Monday, June 15, 2026

Be prepared!

Rides are weather-dependent as we often find cold, rain, and/or snow awaits us on the pass. Some coordinators may wait for a "weather window" and post last minute rides for fair-weather riders. Many intrepid riders do not let the weather stop us however!

Tailgate socials: Bring your own lawn chair, blankets and snacks for socializing after the ride. The store at Highwood Junction will likely be open for refreshments as well. Last year they opened in time to cater to the hundreds of cyclists doing this ride.

Reminder: You must have a Kananaskis park pass to visit the park. See: https://www.alberta.ca/kananaskis-conservation-pass.aspx

Banff Just the Best Bits, Adv, 90km, 971m, LyleOpseth (Saturday, June 06, 2026)

  Coordinator: Lyle Opseth

  Difficulty:

Pace: 23-25 km/h, intermediate

    Distance: 91 km, intermediate

Elevation Gain: 971 m, advanced

  E-bikes: Yes

Description:

This popular ride is the shorter version of the whole enchilada ride for those of us wanting an easier ride and still want to cycle the best parts of the whole enchilada ride, saving things like the trip up the Norquay switchbacks for another weekend. We know we can do it; we just don't need to prove it--yet.

Nonetheless, due to the early season, this is considered an advanced ride due to the distance and elevation.

This route includes Canmore to Banff on the Legacy Trail, Lake Minnewanka with a side-trip to Johnson Lake, Tunnel Mountain, views of Bow Falls from both sides of Bow River, and the scenic golf course loop.

We will stop at photogenic sites as needed for those whose trigger finger needs to shoot some photos (e.g., Bow Falls, Banff golf course, etc.)

Those who don't fancy doing Tunnel Mountain Road and Tunnel Mountain Drive twice can take the low shortcut through the townsite on the return to Canmore.

We will stop at Central Park approximately half-way into the ride for a lunch stop, washrooms, and an opportunity to refill water bottles.

There will be a tailgate party after the ride in the parking lot.

Parking:
The legacy trail parking lot in Canmore, see the map below. Also, formerly the Travel Alberta Canmore Visitor Centre located on the south side of Hwy 1 on the west end of Canmore Service Road. See: https://goo.gl/maps/eNY5ZK1f1JsPwhAUA

Safety:

traffic on shared roads; narrow shoulders

the bridge crossing on the road to Johnson Lake is single lane

we are in bear country, consider carrying bear spray

no cell service in some areas (e.g., Lake Minnewanka)

steep sections on some roadways (Lake Minnewanka, Tunnel Mountain Road)

Distance: 60 km (intermediate)

Elevation: 835 m, advanced (steep grades)

Pace: 25 km/h (on the flats of course, speed may be greater on the descents if you dare and naturally slower on the climbs)

E-Bikes allowed: no

Details:

We are as ready as we ever will be this time of year for the classic ride up the Elbow River on Highway 66 to Forget Me Not Pond. We run this ride before the Elbow Falls gate opens to vehicles May 15.

This version ride starts at Bragg Creek Provincial Park (NOT the community centre in Bragg Creek), heads up Route 66 to Forget-me-not Pond.

Limited stops, no sweep - we will regroup at key milestones (Summit). We will stop at the Forget-me-Not Pond day use area to soak in the scenery of the pond and to enjoy our packed lunches.

At Bragg Creek Prov Park there are parking spots, washrooms, grass and picnic tables here for our enjoyment and relaxation after the ride. We will have a tailgate party afterwards. Bring a lawn chair and refreshment!

Safety:

The road is closed at Elbow Falls to the end and there is generally no cell service.

Be prepared for self-support. Bring a pump, patch kit, tools, spare tubes, etc.

The weather at Forget-Me-Not Pond is often cooler and the descents are long. Bring sufficient clothing. Layers are best including wind/rain jacket.

Steep descents. Watch for gravel on the shoulders. You may use the lane where the road is closed to traffic.

East of gate at Elbow Falls, the road is open to traffic…ride single file.
