President
Maria Saley
Maria joined the Elbow Valley Cycle Club for a couple of years back in 1996, with her Miyata 1000 touring bike. The Miyata is no longer with her but Maria rejoined the club in 2014 and has accumulated a few other bikes instead. In addition to her responsibilities on the Board, she leads beginner and intermediate mountain bike rides and an occasional intermediate road ride. When not riding, she also enjoys other outdoor activities and playing music. Maria’s favourite quote is “The way to get things done is to begin” by Horace Greeley

As program director I have the opportunity to meet and work with many club members, and I can tell you that being a part of the board and working with these enthusiastic folks is ...ALMOST as much fun as riding my bike! 2017 was a banner riding year and based on our early season meetings with Ride Convening Committees I am sure that 2018 will be just as good. As much as I love to ride my fatbike and mountain bike over the winter I am really looking forward to getting back on the road this summer of 2018. Catherine and I are planning a trip east and I have already signed up for some scenic rides along the St Lawrence River and along the shores of Lake Ontario. I am still relatively new to the club (considering this is our 35th Anniversary) but there is one thing I have learned that I would share with everyone. If you can, volunteer in some way to make EVCC even better than it is. Whether you volunteer as a ride coordinator or for a special event, the pay back to you will be more than you expected. Guaranteed! See you on the road in 2018!

Multi Day Ride Director
Helen Hayes
Helen started cycling with the EVCC 20 years ago. At the open house of a completed design project she was asked what her next project would be. "I want to buy a bicycle" was her reply and Linda Graham, past board member of the EVCC, overheard the comment, passed her a card and introduced her to the club. Since then, she has cycled every multi-day EVCC ride from Jasper to San Diego and has cycled 5 routes through various parts of Mexico. She is a co-ordinator of day rides as well as the annual Foothills Frolic and the Drumheller Loop multi-day rides. In 2015, Helen took a group to cycle the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, and in 2016 she organized a bike tour through Cuba. Helen presently sits on the Board of Directors as Secretary for the club. She quotes her namesake, Helen Hayes, 1st lady of the American Theater who said: “The only regret I have in my life is never learning how to ride a bicycle.”

I joined EVCC in 2013 after I stopped working for the first time. (Yes I failed my first attempt at retirement). Joining EVCC was one of the best retirement decisions I made. It allowed me to share my love of cycling with other people. I like all types of riding. The Urban Rides allow me to explore parts of Calgary I don't usually see. The Rural rides get me out of city. Any day cycling with friends is a good day. See you on the paths and trails.

Doug McCulloch
Doug bought his first 10 speed in 1968 while at the University of Saskatchewan and he still loves cycling more than ever. Together with Sarah he completed a round-the-world cycle tour in 2003, and they led an EVCC tour to Yorkshire in northern England in 2012.

As President of the Club, Doug is committed to maintaining the recreation nature of the club and to work hard on behalf of cyclists. But most of all, he wants us to keep the joy of a great ride as the primary reason why we belong to the Elbow Valley Cycling Club. One of his goals for 2014 is to build the number of rides offered to members.

Doug’s favorite rides are when the wheels are turning and he’s dressed properly for the day’s weather. City favorites are riding the Bow from Bowness to the Zoo, and country favorites are Horse Creek Road and the Road to Nepal. Nowadays, Doug paces his rides; not too fast but not slow either, he loves to fly down a hill, and while he may be the last to the top of a hill, he’s ready to pedal onward.

His all time favorite ride was yesterday’s...well maybe, but let’s see what today’s ride brings!

Ride Coordinator
Gary Davidge
Since Gary joined the Elbow Valley Cycling Club in June 2008, he has enjoyed over 125 organized rides. As a retired accountant and businessman, in November 2012, he took over the role of Treasurer for the EVCC. Gary has always been an active participant in various athletic endeavors over his life. In the last few years, cycling has been his main activity, but he still gets in a few rounds of golf, some downhill ski days and some hiking. He says that his best memory of riding with the club was cycling Cochrane to Morley on the 1A and back on the Trans Canada which included climbing Scott Lake Hill. Completing this ride gave him the confidence to try most of the club rides. He has some financial advice - "spend less that you earn" and a travel tip - "you can't see it all, so don't try. Instead, on each travel day, learn something new".

He and his wife Marilyn have four children and five grand children.

I’ve been an EVCC member since 2004 and first coordinated an EVCC event in 2009. I’m also proud to say I’m a lifelong Calgarian, born here in 1960. The city and outstanding surrounding outdoor areas have afforded me a wealth of opportunities to enjoy an active standard of living. My favorite cycling activity is mountain biking. Being in the mountains on my bike puts me in a happy state of mind, especially when heading downhill after a long climb. Cycling with a group makes for a number of positive always makes for a more interesting experience. Having my own business and working from home, cycling events through the EVCC have become a good part of my lifestyle and I look forward to each one. Some other activities I enjoy are pathway riding, disc golf, squash, badminton, racquetball, and skating. My EVCC group events are geared toward enjoyment and having fun and not lung busting torture by way of bike. I’m very patient and not particularly competitive however I do strive for the feeling of accomplishment. In riding with the EVCCI have met a lot of really interesting people and have gained some truly wonderful friends. Happy Trails,

I feel like I've always loved being on a bike ever since I was a little kid on my purple speedster. My purpose for riding has morphed from recreation as a kid to a practical commuting vehicle in school and now is currently a mix of both. I started out mountain biking and then got into road riding followed by cycle touring. This must be the slippery slope they talk about in terms of how many bikes are in the garage (currently 4 for me). Gord and I love to see the world from the seat of a bike and we just returned from a 3.5 week cycle tour of Switzerland and Italy (June 2016). We like to challenge ourselves on occasion and have participated in five gran fondo events in three countries, the latest a 134 km - 2800 m elevation gain ride in the Dolomites of northern Italy. We're not fast but we're determined! As a co-ordinator, I love to have social rides that also challenge and are at a pace that allows all levels to enjoy the day. We also love to hear stories of others' adventures because we are always planning that next trip! Just keep spinning.

I'm a multi-sport person (road biking plus hiking, XC skiing, snowshoeing) with an interest in sharing local scenery, particularly new or unusual routes. Since I'm also interested in the local food scene, my events tend to feature opportunities to replenish calories at recommended restaurants and coffee shops. I'm a retiree (former elementary school teacher) enjoying retirement and the opportunity to volunteer my services.

Coordinator
Martine Parent
Martine has always been very active in the outdoors and enjoys many sports in particular, road and mountain biking, and downhill and cross-country skiing. She started road riding in 2011, and became an event coordinator shortly after joining the Club.

Martine likes to coordinate rides at a fairly fast pace (20+ kms/hour). There is no sweeping on her rides, but she regroups at important intersections, so no one gets lost or left behind. She will ride in almost any kind of weather, except in very high winds or pouring rain, unless it starts in the middle of the ride and there is nowhere to seek shelter.

Some of her favorite rides close to the city are in the Springbank area, to Cochrane and back, Highway 66 from Bragg Creek, and Horse Creek Road. She loves riding in the mountains around Banff and Lake Louise, and enjoys making the occasional trip to Drumheller or other nearby towns. She also likes to organize multi-day trips to farther locations.

One of my favorite cycling activities is exploring new routes for the Club with a couple of buddies, mapping them and passing them along. I might have got my start as a 12 year old when I lived in a suburb of Buenos Aires, touring far and wide on my Remington bicycle, discovering and memorizing landmarks and streets.

In 2014 and 2015 I convened the Saturday Adventure Rides, an experiment, setting them up and contacting members to coordinate them. Other members volunteered to convene other rides. We were rewarded in 2015 with records set for numbers of events and levels of participation.

In 2016 the Club is broadening the initiative. Several members have volunteered to join Ride Planning Teams to schedule rides and encourage coordination. We ought to have a great season.

Ride Coordinator
Richard Ward
Richard began riding in the Kootenays on the Rossland Trail hill, including camping tours to Riondel and Christina Lake.

For many years he commuted to work by bicycle along Kingsway in Vancouver. When he joined the Vancouver Bicycle Club, he noticed several potential members didn't return. He started a Saturday morning conversational ride which is now the club’s most popular ride.

Richard came to Calgary to help with family matters. He joined the Elbow Valley Cycle Club which was known as the most inclusive club in Calgary. He began with the Easy Riders, hoping not to get dropped, and learned a lot of routes from veteran city riders.

Richard enjoys medium speed pace line riding. He also rides on snow but, now that he’s retired, he avoids the coldest temperatures. His main interest in cycling is for transportation, but club riding is a good way to improve health and skills. Generally, he cycles to a ride's starting point.

Ride Convener
Rick Harding
I love all kinds of cycling and have been actively touring for over 30 years and have cycled in Turkey, England, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Mexico, and the United States. I love all kinds of cycling from racing to city riding and the goal for this year is 10,000kms. I divide my time between our house in Calgary and our cabin in Invermere. My favorite rides are any city ride and road rides in Kootenay and Banff parks. In the winter I ride the trainer and also cross country and downhill ski.

I have been road riding for 21 years, starting with a Jasper to Lake Louise 3 day ride in 1997 (when I discovered I truly loved this kind of riding/ outdoor activity ). I enjoy hanging out with other bikers, more than almost anybody else . I really enjoy multi-day camping and biking tours in western North America, especially the Mid to Northern part of the American Far West, and the interior of British Columbia. I have also biked once in Italy at a bike hotel on the Adriatic .

I first joined EVCC in another lifetime (when I was working). I primarily enjoyed the Golden Triangle a few times, but branched off to cycle with other friends in the south end of Calgary. As a teacher, on several occasions, I led groups of students to cycle from Jasper to Banff . I have cycle toured with my husband and friends around the world, including Canada, the USA, France, New Orleans, and PEI so far. Speaking English, French and Spanish gives me an advantage to finding my way in foreign countries. In the winter, I spend weekends downhill skiing in Fernie with my family. I'm blessed with 2 children and 4 grand-daughters who are also avid sports enthusiasts. My motto is: “Live every day as if it’s your last, and one day, you’ll be right!”

I love cycling. It’s fun while giving me the freedom to get somewhere reasonably quickly under my own power. A ride can be as challenging or as relaxing as I make it to be. There’s nothing sweeter to me than feeling a smooth road unwind beneath my pedals. I was a ‘tentative’ rider with the club in the sense that my rides were squeezed in when I had time from my other athletic pursuits. About three years ago I accepted a request to be a ride coordinator and have enjoyed the opportunity to be more involved with the club while meeting riders with various cycling backgrounds. There’s lots of rides to explore with a group!
