|Take the challenge and join the Urban Riders Challenge Ride on the
Rotary Mattamy Pathway. This is a challenging circular ride of about
140 km. with an elevation gain/loss of almost 1000m. We follow the
pathway around the city taking in a variety of sites and views and
almost entirely on pathways. Celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the
beginning of the EVCC by participating in this epic challenge. Win
the Challenge Cup!
Although the distance is a challenge, participants can choose to
leave the route and return to Shouldice Park at any point using
streets, bike routes or transit. We start the ride in Shouldice at 9:00
and ride in a group at a moderate pace. The ride starts with a long
climb from the Bow River to its highest point near the Royal Oak
shops and car dealerships. From there we dive down and explore
some of the newest communities in Calgary north of Stoney Trail
before doing a bit of cross country riding on a paved country trail
although two kms of this includes gravel. Then
back over Country Hills and Stoney Trail north of the Airport. From
there we flow eastward as the Pathway bends south for a long
uninterrupted prairie ride all the way to 16th Ave NE. From there we
have found some incomplete sections and have had to eventually
detour along 52nd St. to the junction with Stoney Trail once again.
Having ridden this we have found the almost 20km of path beside a
busy truck route is very slow and unpleasant. Therefore, we will
arrange a shuttle service from 16th Ave. NE to the start of the
pathway at Mahogany and Auburn Bay. From there we go past the
South Calgary Hospital and into the heights of Cranston. And then
back down to the Bow and a lovely ride to the bridge over the Bow
into Fish Creek Park and ice cream at Annies!
Following along after Fish Creek Park we found construction again in
the Woodbine and Oakridge communities which we have to bypass on
city streets right back to North Glenmore Park. Then itís up 37 St.
and along the route past Westhills shopping centre. From there itís a
short hop to Edworthy and back to Shouldice for a well-deserved
Bring along lunch and snacks for a break along the way. We will make
stops for washrooms and supplies.
Although the route is fairly well sign posted, we will encourage riders
to ride in a group and keep behind the leader and ahead of the
sweep! If interested the 2017 pathways map is available at most city
aquatic facilities and it clearly shows the route we will follow.
This ride is posted as an intermediate/advanced ride because of its
distance. Any kind of bike will do as long as you can keep up with an
average paced Urban Ride. Electric assist bikes are welcome but
donít count on your battery for the whole trip.
This ride will be duplicated as a weekend ride in early September and
all riders completing either ride will receive a certificate for
completing the First of what we hope will be a series of Annual
