Routes include residential streets, beach riding on the Pacific Coast Highway shoulder bike lanes, County roads with wide curb lanes, recreational pathways and at times, challenging climbs. There will be frequent opportunities to stop and smell the flowers, explore the beaches, photograph crashing surf & enjoy a coffee or some sea food.
We will use the harbor ferry to access Coronado Island and the train for the day we go north to San Juan Capistrano from Carlsbad. Baggage will be shuttled between hotels for us.
The adventure starts in Old Town San Diego where we use streets and recreational pathways to access beaches and seaside boardwalks, islands and parks including Point Loma, and Sunset Cliffs. Then we cycle up the coast to the town of Carlsbad, our second home for a series of day trips though the communities of San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Oceanside, Del Mar, Solano Beach, Escondido, Rancho Santa Fe, and Encinitas. There is a planned day off here to spend on the beach or where ever you want. We then cycle back to San Diego for a couple days of Coronado Island, Balboa Park and the San Diego Zoo and the San Diego water front before our flight home. Option days throughout give participants a chance to do some sight seeing during the tour.
Most evenings an informal "happy hour" evolves at sunset before dinner on the hotel patio. Both accommodations include a Jacuzzi hot tub.
Although the group will ride together, the route files are available on the Ride With GPS Club website and accessible via your smart phone (with audible turn by turn directions) and via dedicated handlebar mount GPS devices. Cue sheets will be distributed on first day of event.

*"spoke and hub" day trips from the same central "hub" accommodation each day. On this trip, there are 2 hotels that act as hubs. Participants are welcome to take any days off they wish from the ride itinerary. Riding and non-riding spouses welcome.
Deposit ($300) is due on registration and the balance via cheque or e-transfer by Dec 9.
The registration fee above is for a room shared with one other participant. (All amounts in $CA)
The registration fee includes:
- double occupancy hotels
- luggage shuttles
- ferry to Coronado Island
- fare for train to San Juan Capistrano
Does not include:
- flights
- meals (breakfast included in Carlsbad Jan 7-13)
- travel medical insurance
All participants must have their own out of country medical insurance and, of course, a valid passport.
A pre-trip social will be held December 8.
Recommended non-stop flights are:
- YYC-SAN: Jan 3: Westjet 1564 (10:15 AM) and
- SAN-YYC Jan 15: Westjet 1565 (1:30 PM).
The nearby hotel (Best Western Hacienda in Old Town) shuttle picks up and drops off guests at airport. Bikes can be taken as an additional piece of checked baggage for about $75 each way.
Westjet supplies free plastic bike bags (available at domestic check-in area).
For carbon fibre bikes a shipping case (available for rent from bike shops) are recommended and can be stored at our hotel in Old Town San Diego.
Cancellation Policy
Once your deposit/payment has been received, a cancellation fee of $25 will be deducted from your refund, regardless of when you cancel up to 45 days from the tour departure.
Up to 45 days prior to tour departure: Full refund minus the $25 cancellation fee. 44 - 30 days prior to tour departure: 50% refund. Less than 30 days, no refund.
Note: If a paying replacement is found to take your place, then you will receive a full refund minus the $25 automatic cancellation fee. In the unlikely event that the tour is entirely cancelled, your payment will be fully refunded.
Costs such as air-line tickets, costs incurred due to travel delays, flight cancellations or illness and related costs incurred by a member but not included in the EVCC trip fee are not refundable by the EVCC. Members are advised to purchase their own travel cancellation insurance.
