ROAD RIDE - INTERMEDIATE+/ADVANCED (DISTANCE AND CLIMBING)

         Coordinator: Lyle Opseth

Distance: 88 Km

Pace: 22-25 kph

Elevation Gain: 990 m

Ride format: No sweep, limited stops

NOTE: Banff NP is not opening Peyto Lake viewpoint area and is keeping closures in place (including stopping on highway 93 in the area of Bow Summit) until at least August 16. An actual grand reopening date is not being announced at this time so I will not reschedule this ride. I think it best to cancel the ride at this time and I may schedule another ride once the park is able to confirm an opening date depending on circumstances.

Route description:

Enjoy the newly renovated day use area at Bow Summit with great views of Peyto Lake.

With the Peyto Lake Viewpoint opening July 31st, we will make a journey along highway 93 to Bow Summit and then to the Peyto Lake Viewpoint. We will also see what improvements have been made at the viewpoint. We can also stop at Bow Lake and other spots with great vistas to enjoy the views.

Leaving and returning Lake Louise, we will use Village Road to the western end and following the bike path that goes over highway 1 and runs beside highway 1 and highway 93 to the park pass checkstop. This route avoids riding on highway 1 or going over the overpass and it's cattle guards on the way out.

We will then follow highway 93 to/from Bow Summit and make the final steep climb up to the Peyto Lake Viewpoint.

This is an intermediate+/advanced ride due to a combination of distance and climbing.

Parking and meeting spot:

There is a lesser known public parking lot behind the Husky gas bar and the nearby restaurant, across Village Road from the information centre. Do not use the Sampson Mall parking lot due to parking time limits. We will meet at the information centre to begin the ride.

Wheels roll at 9:30 am. The early start helps ensure we have plenty of parking.

  • Safety:
  • Please ensure your contact info is up to date in the system before the ride -- including your cell phone number and emergency contact.
  • Most of the route does not have cell service.
  • Be self-sufficient: bring your own tools, spare tubes, etc
  • This is bear country: consider bringing bear spray
