ROAD RIDE: Advanced distance, hills and pace

         Coordinator: Trevor Penford

Distance: 94 Km

Pace: 25-28 kph

Elevation Gain: 1,200 m

Description:

You've done Highwood Pass in spring and summer... have you ever done it in the fall? In the third week of September, we hope to see the golden hues of the larches in full "bloom" with their fall colours.

This is a variant of "Highwood Pass from the South". In any season, this is a classic mountain ride with spectacular scenery. Fun facts: This is the highest paved pass in Canada, reaching a height of 2,206 m. Our parking spot is at a bend on the Highwood River, which originates from the pass.

Parking and meeting spot:

On Google maps this place is called "Highwood Group Use"

Highwood River Provincial Recreation Day Use Area, located on Highway 541, SW of Longview.

Wheels rolling @ 10 a.m. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early so we can start on time.

Social elements:

  • Longer snack stop and photo op at the top, weather permitting!
  • Apres-ride social in the day use area following our ride. BYO lawn chairs and refreshments - there are no cafes in sight!

Safety:

  • At this time of year, we can expect variable mountain weather. It can be very chilly descending from the pass. Please come prepared with appropriate warm clothing - mitts, jackets, hats, and booties may be needed!
  • Bears may be active in this area preparing for their hibernation. Please bring bear spray.
  • Part (most?) of the route is out of cellular service. As a group we will collectively ensure no one is left to ride alone.
