Banff to Lake Louise Ski Resort

         Coordinator: Lyle Opseth/Heather Opseth

Distance: 117 Km

Pace: 23-27 kph

Difficulty: advanced distance; faster intermediate pace

Elevation Gain: 946 m

Route description:

There have been a couple of rides from Canmore up to Lake Louise to cycle a proper century (100 miles). For those interested in a metric century (100 km), we will cycle a shorter ride from Fenlands in Banff townsite to the Lake Louise Ski Resort. We will follow the Vermilion Lakes Road to reach highway 1A (using the Legacy Trail section that joins Vermilion Lakes Rd with 1A) and follow 1A to Whitehorn Drive and head to the ski resort.

Some rides have gone to the ski resort and found that a good place to stop for a lunch break. It is better than the crowds and traffic on the other side of the TransCanada.

A bonus is that if you ride the parkway to the Banded Peak Base Camp and show your strava or garmin, you get a free beer and t-shirt! This is available until Sept. 19. See the following URL if you don't believe me: Parkway to Pint

We then return along the same route we went out to find a tailgate party at the end.

This is meant to be a faster intermediate pace (i.e., 23+ km/h). As there is no sweep, if you can't maintain the pace you may be dropped and riding alone. Please don't register unless you are able to cycle the advertised pace.

Time:

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early
  • Wheels rolling at 9:00 a.m.
  • Out of respect for those who arrive on time, we won't wait for latecomers.

Safety elements:

  • Consider carrying bear spray
  • There are areas on 1A without cell service
  • Be self-sufficient; carry tools and be prepared to perform simple bike maintenance
  • There will be no sweep
