You Want to See More of Banff

This week's theme is "In Case You Missed It" (#ICYMI)

         Coordinator: Lyle Opseth

Distance: 91 Km

Pace: 22-25 kph

Difficulty: advanced distance; intermediate pace

Elevation Gain: 973 m

Route description:

You have ridden highway 1A countless Mondays and many other days too. You've zipped past Johnston Canyon (and even stopped there), you've picnicked at Castle Junction and you've even picnicked at Baker Creek, explored Lake Louise and perhaps Moraine Lake on previous club rides. But you missed Lake Minnewanka, Johnson Lake, the spectacular vistas seen only from the Banff Springs Golf Course, felt the spray and heard the thunder of Bow Falls, and you haven't ridden the Legacy Trail from Canmore yet. There haven't been many club rides that explored these areas. It's been all Highway 1A because much of the road to Castle Junction has been closed to cars. So, before winter comes, this is your chance to rediscover what you've missed (weather permitting of course)!

To keep the distance down, I've neglected the climb up Norquay on this ride. There's a great view of Banff from the lookout. You missed Norquay too? Perhaps it will be on another ride? Coordinate one please! I can only do so much.

Time:

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early
  • Wheels rolling at 10:00 a.m.
  • Out of respect for those who arrive on time, we won't wait for latecomers.

Safety elements:

  • Consider carrying bear spray
  • There are areas without cell service
  • Be self-sufficient; carry tools and be prepared to perform simple bike maintenance
  • We will regroup at important intersections
