THE BEST OF THE LAKE LOUISE AREA

ROAD RIDE - INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED (DISTANCE AND CLIMBING)

         Coordinator: Lyle Opseth

I'm hoping to run the ride again prior to the TransCanada reopening on May 20th. Currently, Monday May 16 is projected to be the warmest day (High +15C). The people currently registered have been carried forward from the original date of this ride.

Ride Date: May 16

This ride will be prior to May 20th so we can cycle the TransCanada highway when it will be quiet as the highway is closed past Yoho and there will only to local traffic.

Distance: 74 Km

Pace: 22-25 kph

Elevation: 940 m

Difficulty:

Distance: Intermediate

Elevation: Advanced (Kicking Horse Pass)

Ride format: No sweep, limited stops

E-bikes: Yes

Route Description:

Highway 1 is closed just east of Golden BC until May 20th so there is only local traffic from Lake Louise to Field along highway 1. This is our opportunity to cycle this iconic highway, climbing over Kicking Horse Pass without the traffic you would normally experience cycling the Golden Triangle.

We will start in Lake Louise and cycle the pathway to the park pass check gate at highway 93, then continue from there along highway 1, over Kicking Horse Pass, past field and complete the 7 km road to Emerald Lake. We will return the same way.

This is an intermediate+/advanced ride due to a combination of distance and climbing.

Parking and meeting spot:

There is a lesser known public parking lot behind the Husky gas bar and the nearby restaurant, across Village Road from the information centre. Do not use the Sampson Mall parking lot due to parking time limits. We will meet at the information centre to begin the ride.

Wheels roll at 11:00 am.

  • Safety:
  • Please ensure your contact info is up to date in the system before the ride -- including your cell phone number and emergency contact.
  • Parts of the route do not have cell service.
  • Be self-sufficient: bring your own tools, spare tubes, etc
  • This is bear country: consider bringing bear spray
The Best of Lake Louise and area:

I am planning to host approximately three or four rides this summer to tour through the beautiful Lake Louise area. These rides will generally start at Lake Louise or Castle Mountain Junction. Some longer rides (100+ km) may start in Banff. I hope to visit Emerald Lake in Yoho, Peyto Lake/Bow Summit, Moraine Lake, and possibly Takakkaw Falls. I will attempt to schedule these rides during non-peak traffic periods (i.e., rides in June/July/August will likely be weekdays).

This is your opportunity to explore even farther up Highway 1 or 1A and highway 93 than the "Best of Banff" rides that start in Canmore or Banff.
