CANCELLED: SHOWERS & COOL

Different forecasts give different probabilities but all suggest a good chance of showers and some are at 100%, others a bit lower, and with a strong chance of thunderstorms if it does rain. It's a long drive to Banff to ride in the rain in rather cool conditions. I hope to reschedule this ride for a nicer day later this summer. Conditions look a bit more promising around Calgary Tuesday for a ride.

Coordinator: Lyle Opseth

Distance: 90 km

Difficulty:

Pace: 23-25 km/h (intermediate)

Distance: 90 km (advanced)

Elevation Gain: 992 m (advanced; difficult climb)

E-bikes: Yes

<Cranky Anonymous Member>: What's up? You had posted a solstice ride June 21 and a Banff/LL ride June 24 and now the solstice ride is gone and another coordinator has taken over the June 24 ride. Am I annoying you too much? I'm just trying to be helpful. By the way, your enchilada ride made me hungry for more. FEED ME PLEASE! (I'm saying "Please." Will that help?)

<Coordinator>: It's life Cranky. Things come up and I'm not available. There's been new coordinators this year organizing great rides which I've been signing on. When I ran the "Not Quite the Whole Enchilada" ride June 3, I skipped some things the "Whole Enchilada" ride did. Now, I'm offering to do the rest of that ride and more! The weather forecast is looking promising.

I'm preparing for the Okanagan Gran Fondo with its hard climbs so I want to do Norquay to be ready. You can skip it if you like.

We will starting with a loop around the Banff golf course, then go up Norquay for a hill climb (the hot weather should be over so Cranky should be happy about that) and end a trip out to Castle Mountain Junction. There are great views to be had on all these sections. Anyone wanting to make it a 100 km bike ride (or more) can ride out towards Baker Creek.

Parking: We will again meet in the parking lost just east of the train station near the porta-potties. Use the east entrance on the traffic circle. Or click on the location in the Apricot App. (Note: the GPS coordinates are correct . There are signs on the east exit of the traffic circle indicating the entrance to the parking lot.)

Safety:

  • Consider carrying bear spray
  • There are areas on 1A without cell service
  • 1A is now open to regular traffic east of Johnston Canyon
  • Be self-sufficient; carry tools and be prepared to perform simple bike maintenance (especially where the road is closed to vehicles)
  • There will be no sweep. We will regroup as needed.
